The Los Angeles Rams first turned to the element of surprise through Puka Nacua's 45-yard rushing touchdown in the opening quarter. They then pivoted to defense throughout the second half in throttling the Tennessee Titans 33-19 Sunday, including watching one starter take his game to the "next level."
Head coach Sean McVay witnessed his defense raise their level of play against the top overall pick in the NFL Draft. Cam Ward executed one highlight-reel touchdown throw to Elic Ayomanor. But the Rams clamped down from there.
Particularly one defensive star who shined in the romp. And who McVay spoke glowingly of after the win.
McVay loved what he saw out of one of his more consistent performers Byron Young. Except the Super Bowl-winning head coach saw a side of Young he hadn't seen before.
"I thought (Young) took his game to the next level. I thought just his pursuit, you see when Ward's able to extend plays, he's got the speed to be able to track him down," McVay said to reporters after the win. "I think he made the game-changing play where he forces the sack fumble."
The Rams led 20-16 with under 12 minutes to play and Tennessee having the ball at its own 29. A touchdown swings the lead back to the Titans' way for the third time in the contest.
Except Young powered through Ward's wall of protection. He forced the strip sack of the No. 1 pick from April.
B.Y. with the strip! Landman with the recovery!

Nate Landman pounced on the loose football from there -- and the momentum stayed on L.A.'s side from there.
Davante Adams helped turn that takeaway into an offensive touchdown -- scoring his first Rams TD from 16 yards out to build the lead at 27-16. The Rams never trailed from there.
But again, Young changed the tide in front of Tennessee. He led the edge rush room with five total tackles including four solo stops.
The third-year defender compiled two sacks, though, to lead the Rams. Especially on a day L.A. tussled down the elusive Ward five times for sacks.
It marked the first time since Nov. 5, 2023 that Young grabbed multiple sacks. He took down Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers twice despite the 20-3 loss that afternoon.
Young now has 18.5 sacks through three seasons. He adds his own speed-to-rush element for the Rams. This time he proved he's built to chase and drag down athletic QBs like Ward.
