Sean McVay shares funny detail about his recruitment of Davante Adams

The Los Angeles Rams added a top wide receiver on Sunday when they agreed to a deal with Davante Adams, and Sean McVay says he had to make some long-distance calls to help get the job done.

Adams has reportedly agreed to join the Rams on a two-year, $46M contract that includes $26M in guaranteed money. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the deal came together while Adams was in Japan.

McVay told Garafolo that the Rams head coach recruited Adams by making phone calls to Japan. Eventually, Adams was convinced that L.A. is the right spot for him.

"He's been recruiting Davante Adams, who is in Japan, so the time difference has made things a little bit difficult with regard to getting him," Garafolo said. "He said he's been recruiting him hard, been trying to get him there. He finally got it done. He's so jacked."

You can understand why McVay was so persistent. The Rams are clearly eyeing another Super Bowl in 2025, which is why they brought Matthew Stafford back on a restructured contract. L.A. already has an elite No. 1 wideout in Puka Nacua. Cooper Kupp revealed earlier this offseason that the Rams intend to part ways with him, and the addition of Adams will now make the former All-Pro even more expendable.

Though he will turn 33 next season, Adams remains one of the best wide receivers in football. He had 1,063 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in time split between the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets last season. Adams has eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in six of the last seven years.

Adams is the type of player who can change an offense. That makes him worth more than a few phone calls to Japan.
