Sean Payton can help the Dallas Cowboys make Dak Prescott's life a lot easier in 2024

When you manage an NFL team, and you have a franchise quarterback, there is always a primary objective.

Keep that quarterback happy.

Objectively, the Dallas Cowboys haven't done the best job about that. It stems back to giving Dak Prescott the franchise tag back in 2021. What happened a few months after that would be a sight that no one wanted to see. 

Dak Prescott would go down with an ankle injury that would end his season and lead to months of rehab.

Luckily, the Cowboys ultimately did right by Prescott and gave him the contract he had earned. 

But it was via a path that didn't have to be there in the first place.

This offseason, the Cowboys are shaping up to disappoint their fans and franchise quarterback Dak Prescott yet again. 

It has already been announced that long-time starter, and All-Pro tackle, Tyron Smith will not be returning for the 2024 season. 

So what is their plan? 

A to Z Sports'  Mauricio Rodriguez broke down  five guard targets should the Cowboys decide to move Tyler Smith out to tackle. However, he just played a whole year at guard and he did damn good, earning second-team All-Pro honors. 

Tyler's home is at guard, leave him there.

It is almost definite  that the Cowboys are going offensive line in round one of this year's draft. 

There are significant questions at linebacker as well, we might even see the Cowboys double dip here in the NFL Draft. 

They will likely take a running back at one point, so you're running out of selections quickly.

If you really want to keep your quarterback happy, you get him a shiny new toy. With plenty of needs to address in the draft, one way you can do this is via trade. Luckily for the Cowboys, one team appears to be selling the farm.

The Denver Broncos recently traded Jerry Jeudy for what appears to be peanuts. 
It all but appears the Broncos are selling almost all valuable assets in the intention to turn this into a rebuild.

The Cowboys should trade for Courtland Sutton

With a team selling valuable assets for pennies on the dollar, the Cowboys should be jumping at the opportunity to add more help.

Courtland Sutton makes sense for a couple of reasons. 

Firstly, Sutton is from Dallas. Sutton played his college ball at SMU, so he is local and you could bring him home, creating a hometown hero type of situation.

The second reason is that he would be the best contested catch receiver on the roster. 

The Dallas Cowboys had this type of receiver at one point in Michael Gallup. Gallup would end up getting hurt, and he has yet to return to being the threat he once was. This year Gallup only had seven contested catches on 21 contested catch targets.
Sutton had 12 contested catches on 23 contested catch targets. 

The trade I'm proposing is the Cowboys send Michael Gallup and a 2025 fourth to the Broncos for Courtland Sutton and pick 237 (seventh round) in this years draft.

Sean Payton and the Broncos quite possibly could be selling the farm to the first buyers that appear. Or at least the trade they made earlier gives that appearance.
The Cowboys should strike will the iron is hot. 

Why it makes sense for both sides.

For Dallas it's a fairly easy answer. 

It gives Dak Prescott a new and ideally improved weapon, who will be returning home.

For the Broncos it gives them an asset (and a better one than they got for Jeudy) that can be used in the future, while also giving them a player who at one point was a 1,000 yard receiver and someone who can be a mentor to the young guys in the room.
