Seattle Seahawks make several no-brainer roster moves to free up significant amount of cap space ahead of free agency

In doing so, the Seahawks now have approximately $28 million more in salary cap space. That was much need for Seattle, as it was roughly $6 million over before making these cuts. Let's take a look at what these four players contributed to the Seahawks during their tenure and how much money each of their releases saved.

Dre’Mont Jones: $11,572,500 cap savings

Jones had a two-year stint in Seattle from 2023-2024. During that span he started 23 games, recorded 77 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, 41 quarterback pressures, one forced fumble, and one safety. While still a capable player, Jones never quite lived up to his hefty contract.

Roy Robertson-Harris: $6,600,000 cap savings

The Seahawks acquired Robertson-Harris in a trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars in October. He made a very minimal impact, recording 13 total tackles and two QB pressures in 11 appearances.

Rayshawn Jenkins: $5,280,000 cap savings

Jenkins figured to be an impact signing for Seattle in 2024 after he had two productive years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he missed four games on injured reserve, and was delegated to mostly a backup role afterwards. In 2024 Jenkins recorded 53 total tackles, two sacks, and a 102-yard fumble recovery touchdown.

George Fant: $3,800,000 cap savings

Fant opened the 2024 season as Seattle's starting right tackle, but injuries cost him most of the season as he would only make one more start. It was a one-year stint for Fant with the Seahawks after beginning his career with the team from 2016-2019.

These were no-brainer moves for the Seahawks to make. They may not be finished making cap casualties, as they could free up even more space by releasing the likes of wide receiver Tyler Lockett and tight end Noah Fant, which would save them roughly another $26 million. 

Making those moves would allow Seattle to spend some real money during free agency. With DK Metcalf as the Seahawks' No. 1 WR and the emergence of Jaxson Smith-Njigba in 2024, Lockett could be expendable. As for Fant, he is not coming anywhere close to living up to his contract, and this year's draft class is deep at TE.
