Sometimes, fans get so excited to see rookies that they will push veterans out the door. For the Seattle Seahawks, they saw rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe during the preseason. While he flashed his strong arm and fantastic elusiveness at times, it is clear that he needs some time to develop if he wants to be a starting QB at some point down the road for the Seahawks.
Although, Seattle won't completely toss him onto the bench to watch as a first-year NFL player this season, though. Instead, he will have his own role.
While the first-year passer may be listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart, the Seahawks are not going to shy away from using him in unique ways this season. According to head coach Mike Macdonald, Milroe will have a package of plays involved in the offense.
"We're going to have plays for Jalen in the game plans," Macdonald said, via the team’s official website. "He's going to rep those with the ones. However we build the package for him going into games, he needs those reps in walkthrough and full speed, so that's going to be important. How we do it, who gets how many reps -- obviously Sam (Darnold), it starts with how many reps he needs to get ready, then we kind of work off it from there." -- NFL.com
Sam Darnold was a big-time free agent addition this offseason, but his profile is much different than Milroe's. With the rookie's dynamic athleticism, it would be smart for new OC Klint Kubiak to use him in ways around the football to create chaos for opposing defenses.
Keep in mind - Kubiak worked with Taysom Hill with the New Orleans Saints last season. He has experience getting fast-moving guys who can throw the football involved in both the run and pass game. Even if Milroe doesn't draw a start this season, he can make an impact for Seattle in year one of his pro career.
