Second former San Francisco 49ers TE signs with Atlanta Falcons
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers watched as another free agent tight end from their NFC Championship squad left for the Atlanta Falcons on Monday afternoon. The Falcons continue to add to their pass-catching core as they invest in Kirk Cousins for the upcoming season.

The Atlanta Falcons signed Charlie Woerner in March

The Falcons signed former 49ers 2020 sixth-round pick Charlie Woerner in March. They added wide receiver Darnell Mooney in free agency and traded for Rondale Moore. On Monday, they again went with a tight end from the 49ers.

Former San Francisco 49ers TE Ross Dwelley signs with the Falcons

According to a statement by the Falcons, the team signed Ross Dwelley after a tryout on Monday:

Dwelley comes to Atlanta from the San Francisco 49ers, where he joined as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He played in 84 of a possible 99 regular-season games during his six seasons, starting 17. His best year – 2020 – saw him total 245 yards receiving on 19 receptions, with one touchdown. Last year, he had 12 yards receiving on a single reception.

Dwelley reunites with former 49ers teammate Charlie Woerner in the Falcons tight end room. Woerner signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Falcons in March.

New head coach Raheem Morris must have been impressed with the 49ers tight end unit at his lost stop. Before accepting the Falcons job this offseason, he was the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator from 2021-23, so he’s seen Dwelley and Woerner up close quite a bit in the previous few seasons.
