Secondary Will Be Under a Microscope vs Chicago

It’s the first preseason game of the year, nothing to get too worked up over. Wins and losses in the preseason mean next to nothing. Still, all Miami Dolphins fans (as well as Anthony Weaver, Chris Grier, and Mike McDaniel) will have the secondary under a microscope for the three hours the game is taking place.

Miami’s secondary, on paper, is the worst in the NFL.

Everyone knows it; there is no spin to put on it to try to claim it’s “not that bad.”

So, every training camp practice and preseason game is a big deal for that entire secondary.

Cornerbacks and safeties.

Some players, before the first preseason game in a few hours, may have already played themselves out of a roster spot, such as Cam Smith.

I mean, could he turn things around and salvage his NFL career, I guess, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

He’s been bad since day one, and so far in this training camp, he seems to be regressing instead of progressing.

Other cornerbacks, though, have a golden opportunity to make an impact to solidify a roster spot or starting position.

Kendall Sheffield, an NFL journeyman, has had a very strong training camp, and if he carries that over into the preseason games, he should lock up a starting cornerback spot, possibly even CB1.

Storm Duck, the 2nd year undrafted free agent, has also had a strong camp and is looking to lock up a starting position.

How will Cornell Armstrong, who hasn’t been in the NFL for two seasons, look? He may be Miami’s starting nickel-back with Kader Kohou out for the season.

Does rookie Jason Marshall Jr look like someone who is an NFL player who can get playing time as a rookie?

Does the raw talent of Jack Jones shine above everyone else, and does he look to win a starting spot?

So many questions for the Dolphins at cornerback, and we also have to consider, does this group look so bad that it forces Chris Grier to run out and sign Rasul Douglas or Asante Samuel Jr?

At safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick probably isn’t playing, but what else do we have at that position?

Ashtyn Davis is out with an injury and no word on for how long, so can Patrick McMorris make an impact on the field Sunday?

Will undrafted rookie John Saunders Jr continue his great training camp and carry it over to the preseason game?

Will Jordan Colbert make a statement to win a roster spot?

Has Elijah Campbell, who is great on special teams, improved at safety to start opposite Fitzpatrick or be the 3rd safety on this team?

The Dolphins’ secondary will be the main focal point Sunday, and we will begin to get some answers as to how that group looks. And if its bad, I expect Chris Grier to jump into action and make some moves.
