Settled-Down Chiefs Unit Key To Super Bowl Hopes

One of the Kansas City Chiefs' biggest issues last season was the play of their offensive line.

With Patrick Mahomes being sacked a career-high 47 times (including playoffs), the line, which was chopped and changed with Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia both failing to show they could handle the starting role, meant guard Joe Thuney had to be shifted out to tackle.

Mike Caliendo was thrust into the starting guard role, and the line got mauled in the Super Bowl.

This offseason, Jaylon Moore was signed in free agency, and Josh Simmons was drafted in the first round to help solidify the left side of Mahomes' protection.

Now, for NFL Network's Judy Battista, who was speaking on "The Insiders," it all must come together on the field.

"Fixing that offensive line and getting that offensive line settled down was the No. 1 issue going into the offseason," Battista said. "They've now committed quite a few resources to it. They just used their first-round draft pick on a tackle, and they've thrown money at it in free agency. Now they need to get that offensive line on the field, working together and settled. Last year, part of the problem was there was so much shuffling going on, they just couldn't get set, and it showed repeatedly. That was their undoing last season."

Mandatory minicamp and training camp will be pivotal in ensuring the Chiefs' offensive line meshes together as a cohesive unit.

Because last year, they were anything but, and as Battista stated, it showed on the field, and Mahomes was a sitting duck in the Super Bowl. Now, with moves being made this offseason, the time has come for those players to step into their roles and take the opportunity with both hands.

And that begins this offseason at minicamp.

Because everything else feels like it is rolling in the right direction, with the offensive line perhaps the last piece of the 2025 Super Bowl puzzle to be placed.
