Seventh-round Steelers rookie has real chance to make team

The Steelers have a major hole they must fill before the start of the 2023 season and their seventh-round pick in this year's draft may be the answer.

Offensive lineman Spencer Anderson, the No. 251 overall pick, has been " getting some work at center" after a very concerning performance by Kendrick Green in Pittsburgh's first preseason game.

Green struggled mightily in the game, and it has the Steelers searching for an answer at backup center.

Pittsburgh put a lot of effort into strengthening its offensive line this offseason with the additions of veteran guard Isaac Seumalo and first-round left tackle Broderick Jones. It could be all for nothing if Green finds his way into the starting lineup.

Veteran Mason Cole will be the starter at center, barring any injury, but if he were to get injured, the Steelers could find themselves in a troubling scenario.

Anderson can prevent that as he has proven his versatility, playing at left guard, right guard and right tackle in his NFL debut. If he can add center to his repertoire, he has a real shot to make the team.

"Just getting my first NFL snaps was good. ... Like I said, wherever I'm at, I'm just giving it my best," Anderson told reporters. "Whatever's good with the team, is good with me."

He seems to have the willingness to help the team in any way possible. If his play can match that, Pittsburgh will avoid having to look at whatever outside options are available.

The Steelers' 2023 draft class is already viewed as one of the best among the rest of the league. Anderson making the 53-man roster would only further prove that point.
