Several GMs explain why Bears should trade QB Justin Fields

Even though Justin Fields' play has improved over the past few games, NFL general managers believe the Chicago Bears should trade the quarterback this offseason.

Per Yahoo Sports NFL reporter Charles Robinson, at least seven GMs feel moving on from Fields and taking USC QB Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is a better option.

"It would be a clear-cut decision to draft Caleb for me," an AFC GM told Robinson. "The fact that we're in Year 3 and [they] don't want to exercise the fifth-year option tells me what I need to know. I just don't think Fields can win consistently as a passer even though he is gifted physically."

Several experts believe Williams is not only the best QB but also the best player in this class. ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. recently rated him as his top prospect.

Over his past three games, Fields flashed the potential that made him the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He's completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 609 yards, two TDs, no interceptions, an above-average 92.1 passer rating and led Chicago to two victories.

Still, the Bears' playoff chances are slim. The New York Times simulator gives them an eight percent chance to make the postseason.

Assuming the team misses the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, entering rebuilding mode and trading the 24-year-old for more draft capital seems like the right move.

Robinson noted one GM claimed a Fields trade would net a second- and fourth-round pick, "pending a good finish to the season." Plus, multiple teams would be interested in a young passer with some untapped potential, including the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders.
