Shanahan: There's 'a chance' 49ers QB Brock Purdy plays in Week 3

Don't count out San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy for Week 3's home opener against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium. Purdy is currently considered week-to-week, leaving the door open for a possible return next weekend.

"I think there's a chance, but we've got to see how the toe goes," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after Sunday's 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints. "It's very up to debate, so we're just taking it a day at a time."

Purdy suffered a left shoulder and toe injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, with the toe injury keeping him out of the game against the Saints. Backup quarterback Mac Jones started in his place.

Earlier reports had suggested a longer recovery timeline. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Purdy was expected to miss two to five weeks, but 49ers general manager John Lynch later emphasized that the team had not set a definitive timetable.

"What we're dealing with is kind of a week-to-week thing," Lynch said. "That's our information. Brock's doing well, coming back from it, and we'll just treat it as such. He's doing a nice job, doing everything he can to get back out there as soon as possible. And so, that's where we're at."

Sunday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers were not optimistic about Purdy's Week 3 availability, but progress is being made, and the team has not ruled out his return. Later, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer suggested Purdy could end up missing just one game—the Week 2 matchup against the Saints.

"Brock is so tough, they actually think maybe it's more like one to three weeks that'll be out for this," Glazer said. "They're a little more optimistic than others."

The 49ers will hold three full practices this week in preparation for the Cardinals, and Purdy's participation in any session would bode well for his availability.

In Purdy's absence, Jones delivered a strong performance against New Orleans, finishing 26-of-39 for 279 yards, three touchdowns, and a 113.1 passer rating.
