Shannon Sharpe claims Jerry Jones can only validate his trust in Dak Prescott by giving him a new contract
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The situation in the Dallas Cowboys regarding Dak Prescott is in a hotchpotch. In his final year, Dak Prescott was supposed to get an annual salary of $59.5 million. In an attempt to make some cap space, the Cowboys’ management restructured his contract, which led to a reduction in the salary structure.

As per the new contract, Prescott is supposed to get an annual salary of $55.5 million as the team converted his $4 million roster bonus into the signing bonus.

However, a new situation has emerged that might lead to the exit of the Cowboys signal caller after the 2024 season. His contract will be over after the season and the Cowboys’ management has not thought of providing him a new contract yet. In addition, the team can not put the franchise tag as it had already been placed earlier.

In the NFL Annual Conference held in Orlando this past weekend, the veteran owner Jerry Jones, however, put his faith in the No.4. He said that he firmly believes that Dak Prescott could take the team to the Super Bowl. However, Shannon Sharpe is not buying these words of the Cowboys owner.

In a relationship, a guy can tell a young lady in a relationship, ‘I love you I love you,’ but until he puts a ring on it do you really love her?… Dak is saying ‘Jerry you keep saying you believe that I can bring you a championship, you believe in me… Sharpe via First Take

Sharpe feels that while Jones might say that he has full confidence in Prescott, it should have matched his actions. Restructuring the QB’s previous contract instead of a solid extension gives the wrong signal.

Last year, when the Cowboys hired Trey Lance without letting Prescott know, it was argued that the Cowboys were looking to end the chapter of Prescott. Nevertheless, last season was the best for Prescott as he registered some mammoth stats. Barring the postseason vows, the regular season alone warranted a proper contract extension in 2025 for Prescott.

Shannon Sharpe asks Jerry Jones to believe in Prescott with a solid contract

Sharpe was not done with Jerry Jones on the latest episode of ESPN’s First Take. The veteran analyst didn’t pull punches when he gave an example of how to install trust in your employee.

The way you show loyalty to an employee, to tell them you believe in them is money and tenure. So give me four or five years. Give me $25 million a year. A $100 million guaranteed, that’ll show me you believe in me. Sharpe added

After last season’s MVP-type numbers, the NFL community was expecting the announcement of Prescott becoming the highest-paid QB ever. The salary reduction of Prescott was the last thing on anyone’s mind. However, Jones too cannot be blamed here, considering the star-studded roster of the Cowboys. Some contract negotiations were bound to happen.

Amid all these restructurings of contracts, there are chances that the Cowboys might opt for more cap reduction in the coming time. The team has not released the official details of the contract and as per an ESPN report, the team might provide a new contract where the salary of the QB might be reduced to $40 million in 2025. In this new term sheet, two more voidable years will be included.
