Shannon Sharpe Under Fire After Harsh J.J. McCarthy Comment

While he is not alone, Shannon Sharpe has joined the club of hot takes that did not age well during Monday Night Football. The 3x Super Bowl Champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer went on record and was critical of Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

As the game went along, especially in the fourth quarter, McCarthy flipped the switch, and Sharpe quickly was under fire for his harsh comments on the signal-caller. His words, after a third-quarter interception, which was returned for a touchdown:

"This isn’t the Big 10, McCarthy. Where you can throw 10x after you run 40x for 300yds and guys are wide open. You’ve got 2 throw guys open and be on time. You’re L8 it’s a reservation for 6. #BearsVikes#MondayNightFootball"

The 22-year-old who won a College Football playoff title at the University of Michigan led the Vikings to 21 fourth-quarter points, and even ran for a touchdown to put the Vikings on 10 late in the game.

McCarthy finished the game 13 of 20 passing for 143 yards and had two touchdown passes. He also ran the football twice for 25 yards and a touchdown. His passing touchdowns went to two of his top targets, with Justin Jefferson and Aaron Jones both getting in.

It certainly was a struggle at halftime in his career debut. The Vikings scored just two field goals and were shut out in the third quarter. McCarthy was not alone in the comeback, as the Minnesota defense held the Chicago offense out of the end zone from the 7:04 mark in the first quarter until 2:02 remaining in the game.

One of the big moments that came back to haunt Ben Johnson during his first game as a head coach was challenging a potential fumble from Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson. The play was not reversed, and Minnesota kept the ball, and Chicago lost the time-out. The Bears could have used that timeout late in an effort to kick a game-tying field goal.

McCarthy and the Vikings will look to get off to a 2-0 start, as they host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football in Week 2. The Bears will go on the road and take on Dan Campbell and his Detroit Lions.
