Shedeur Sanders is changing his NFL jersey number.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback wore No. 12 during his rookie season in the NFL. Sanders, who fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, made seven starts in his first NFL season. The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback ended up throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, making the Pro Bowl (after several top QBs dropped out or declined invitations).

Now, heading into Year 2, Sanders will be wearing an appropriate number.

The Browns announced that Sanders will be rocking No. 2 with the AFC North franchise moving forward.

The Browns, who are led by new head coach Todd Monken, will look to take a step forward in 2026.

But who will be starting at quarterback?

The Browns aren't making any promises right now

Monken is high on Sanders, though he's not promising him any playing time or starting positions.

“I think what you see is elite playmaking ability,” Monken said at the combine. “That’s in him. You’ve seen it, we’ve seen it, you saw it in college, you saw it on tape last year. Sure there’s a ways to go, but what rookie isn’t? What first-year player doesn’t have a long way to go? I’m excited to get started with him and all of our quarterbacks and all of our players.”

There's no leader right now.

“Sure, I think it’s an open competition,” Monken said. “I don’t know why it wouldn’t be an open competition, and I don’t mean to say that harshly. But I don’t think there’s enough on film over the last couple of years one way or the other to say, ‘Boy, we have a starter at quarterback.’”
