As Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders waits for his first NFL snap, at least he’ll get to throw to Luke Floriea again.
Sanders couldn’t hide his excitement after learning that the Browns re-signed Floriea, a Kent State product who quickly became a fan favorite during the preseason, to their practice squad on Tuesday. Cleveland waived the 23-year-old Floriea on Aug. 11 after he suffered a hamstring injury.
Floriea impressed over the summer and turned heads with a 30-yard, one-handed catch from Sanders in the Browns’ preseason opener. However, he hurt himself on the catch and did not return.

“Our connection is really, really good,” Sanders told reporters about Floriea and fellow practice squad receiver Gage Larvadain. “He spent the summer with me, of course. But, a lot of other guys [that are] even out there with us, the connection is crazy.”
Sanders quipped that although reporters can’t always see him throwing to Floriea in practice, they should believe him about their chemistry.
“But take my word for it,” Sanders laughed. “I’m trustworthy. ... We’re ready.”
The Browns released third-year defensive end K.J. Henry from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Henry, a 2023 sixth-round pick of the Washington Commanders, did not get into a game for the Browns this year.
The 5-foot-8, 179-pound Floriea recorded 44 catches, 699 yards, and seven touchdowns for a winless Kent State squad last year. He impressed against the ACC’s Pittsburgh Panthers in the Golden Flashes’ 2024 opener, posting six catches, 104 yards, and a touchdown in a 55-24 blowout loss.
We’ll see whether Sanders or Floriea crack the Browns’ gameday roster soon. Cleveland has listed Sanders as the third-string quarterback to start the season, and there are no indications that he’ll surpass Joe Flacco or Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart.
Cleveland (1-2) plays at the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon. The FanDuel Sportsbook listed the Browns as +8.5 road underdogs (bet $100 for a $195.24 payout) as of Wednesday morning.
