Shedeur Sanders, Who’ll Likely Start as QB4 for Browns, Isn’t Guaranteed a Roster Spot

As day 3 of the NFL Draft came to an end, Deion Sanders and his family rejoiced, for both his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, were picked by NFL teams. Albeit late, Shedeur went to Cleveland with the 144th overall pick. He now finds himself as the fourth-string quarterback on a team with a stacked QB room featuring Joe Flacco, Deshaun Watson, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.

The Browns will not move forward with all of them on their final 53-man roster, however, the team wants to make sure they analyze each of their capabilities in detail, to ensure they have a solid option at starter and backup. From a purely commonsensical view, Joe Flacco has the best odds to be the starter. Deshaun Watson’s availability for the upcoming season is questionable, so the battle will be between Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders for the positions of the backup and third-string quarterback.

Although Shedeur Sanders has inked his rookie contract with the Browns for four years, he is not guaranteed a position on the team’s roster. Respected Browns team reporter Daniel Oyefusi further solidified the narrative that Sanders is likely to be left out of the final roster due to his draft positioning.

Getting drafted behind Gabriel adds an element of uncertainty to Sanders’ rookie season. While he was widely ranked ahead of the third-rounder before the draft, Sanders will likely begin training camp as the fourth QB on the depth chart and won’t be guaranteed a roster spot.

The analyst said via ESPN. The obvious question in this case will be, ‘What happens to Sanders if he fails to secure a roster spot?’ The answer is brutal. Considering the value of his deal, Cleveland will not hesitate to cut him and render him a free agent. However, note that this is the worst-case situation.

Shedeur Sanders has been working hard to earn his spot on the Browns roster

Every day will be a challenge for the quarterbacks, particularly Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders, at the Browns’ training camp. This is positive news for Shedeur as it will mean he has an opportunity to earn a roster spot. It is unlikely that any of the rookies will be elevated as the starter. However, if Sanders performs well, he can eclipse Pickett and Gabriel to serve as Flacco’s backup for the start of the season.

As the season progresses, Shedeur can be elevated to the starter’s role. This will be easier said than done as Gabriel is not about to go down without a fight, and neither is Pickett. The hype surrounding Sanders is the highest, but if there is one thing that recent history has taught fans, hype can be a double-edged sword, as was the case with Sanders in the draft. Cleveland has not had success in drafting and developing a quarterback since 1999.

Their luck with elite draft prospects has not been one to be proud of either. Both Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield came out of college as the top picks in their draft class, but once they went to Cleveland, they struggled. HC Kevin Stefanski is likely to take this into account and stick to either Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett as his starting QB.

While the latter has a few years of experience under his belt, if he gets outplayed by the rookies, Pickett will be limited to a backup QB. The last time that Flacco was the starter for the Browns organization, he turned the team’s fate around and led them to the playoffs. Which is why it should be expected that he will win the starter’s role.

Joe Flacco commands the respect, he has the experience, and has won a Super Bowl, all traits that unify a locker room, and encourage fans to support the team. The Browns require a personality such as Flacco, especially in the aftermath of the Deshaun Watson tragedy.
