The controversy around Sherrone Moore’s firing in late 2025 continues to be discussed in the college football world. But a new conversation is emerging about what comes next. Moore was dismissed from Michigan’s head coach role after evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer emerged. The situation escalated quickly, and Moore faced criminal charges.
In 2026, he accepted a plea deal, avoiding jail time but receiving probation. Speaking on the Adapt & Respond podcast, RJ Young recently discussed the matter at length. He pointed to a longer road back.
“There are only a handful of universities that are on the level of Michigan,” Young said, adding that he doesn’t see Moore leading one of those elite-tier schools again. It’s not necessarily about coaching ability. Before the controversy, Moore was widely viewed as a rising figure, especially after stepping into a larger role during Michigan’s championship run under Jim Harbaugh. But in college football, off-field issues tend to linger longer than on-field success.
Young also discussed Michigan’s leadership. Specifically, athletic director Warde Manuel. In an earlier interview with the Detroit News, Manuel admitted feeling “betrayed” after solid evidence emerged in the Sherrone Moore controversy.
Discussing Moore’s career in the coming few years, Young looked confident that he will get another job. He believes it is about ‘when’ and not ‘if’. “In the next five to 10 years, he’s gonna get an opportunity to coach somewhere,” Young said.
History suggests that Moore will get another shot. However, this time, he will have to start from a lower position and work his way back up. Whether that is as a coordinator or an analyst, the first step back will be outside the spotlight.
However, even if Moore gets another solid job, the reputational hit may permanently shape how people view him. Any big school, like Michigan, tends to be careful about who they hire and what their past actions represent.
Still, college football has always been a sport of second chances. If Moore can stay out of trouble and produce results, the narrative can shift. It just won’t happen overnight.
