'Should be healthy competition' — Veteran defender is excited for new additions Chiefs have acquired in the secondary

The Chiefs put an emphasis on strengthening their secondary during the 2025 offseason.

One of Kansas City's first signings in free agency was cornerback Kristian Fulton, who is a five-year NFL veteran. The Chiefs then selected CB Nohl Williams in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Adding them to a group that already features two good players in Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson could make K.C.'s secondary the strength of its defense. While speaking to the media following Day 2 of Chiefs mandatory minicamp practice, Watson discussed the additions of Fulton and Williams and the overall depth at the CB position.

"Very physical, smart player," Watson said of Fulton. "Has great energy. The whole room loves him. Should be healthy competition. I've been doing this for four years now, so that's nothing new, but it should be fun. Playing the in the secondary, you need that depth, just so if anyone gets hurt or anything, you can have someone come in and step up and play the role correctly, and there's no drop-off. Nohl as well, Nohl's looking great. He's a great corner. And then we still have Josh (Williams). So, it's great depth."

Watson got off to a great start in 2024, but an ankle injury cost him 11 games. He is now entering the final year of his rookie contract, so hopefully he can stay healthy and put together the best season of his career. However, it's possible that he loses some snaps to Fulton and Williams in 2025.

On the flip side, perhaps he'll rise to the occasion and step up even more. It appears that McDuffie will go back to playing in the slot more often, with Watson and Fulton holding it down out on the boundaries. We'll see how quickly Williams comes along as a rookie.
