With running back De'Von Achane continuing to battle an injury, should the Miami Dolphins pursue a Washington Commanders star?
The Commanders reportedly placed RB Brian Robinson Jr. on the trading block Sunday. The Dolphins could be a solid destination for the 2022 third-round pick, especially with Achane's status remaining unclear.
On Monday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the third-year RB's soft tissue injury is a calf issue. It caused him to miss Monday's practice, and he'll likely miss the rest of this week.
"[Achane] is an explosive athlete," McDaniel said, via ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. "Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive, especially with explosive players — we don't want to have a long, strenuous nagging issue. So, we probably don't see De'Von this week, after further assessment through [this past] weekend, but that's more preventive just because all trainers across the league have horror stories with calves if you're too aggressive coming back."
The injury update could add to concerns about Achane's durability. The Texas A&M Aggies product suffered knee and shoulder injuries during his rookie season in 2023, missing six games.
Except for Achane — the team's leader in rushing yards (907 in 17 games) last season — the Dolphins backfield is thin. Second-year RB Jaylen Wright rushed for just 249 yards on 68 carries in 15 games last season. Miami took Oklahoma State Cowboys RB Ollie Gordon II in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. It remains uncertain whether he's a steal.
Robinson, 26, would give Miami needed depth at RB. In his first three seasons with the Commanders, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star ran for 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns on 570 carries.
More importantly, he could help the Dolphins solve their third-down woes. In 2024, Miami ranked 25th in the league in third-down conversion percentage (36.3%). Robinson, meanwhile, thrived in these situations. Per ESPN splits, he rushed for 141 yards on 17 carries on third down in 14 games last season.
The real question should be, why wouldn't the Dolphins trade for Robinson? It seems like an excellent move for the team.
