Should Gardner Minshew have been checked for concussion?

Gardner Minshew was hit hard on a scramble play during the Indianapolis Colts’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and there were questions about whether the quarterback should have been checked for a concussion.

The Colts were trailing 14-0 midway through the second quarter and had 3rd-and-6 inside Cincinnati territory. Minshew decided to run for a first down and was hit hard by two defenders just as he reached the line to gain.

As you can see below, Minshew was slow to get up and stumbled a bit.

CBS analyst James Lofton said he felt Minshew should have been checked for a concussion, and many agreed.

It was difficult to tell if Minshew just lost his balance or was dazed. Referees have the ability to stop the game if they feel a player may have suffered a concussion. There are also independent doctors at games who are supposed to look for the signs of head injuries.

Minshew remained in the game and scored a rushing touchdown on the drive, so he did not appear to be any worse for the wear.
