Should the 49ers be afraid of losing Brandon Aiyuk?

Should the 49ers be afraid of losing camp standout Brandon Aiyuk?

On a team filled with superstars on both sides of the football, it can be hard to stand out during the early months of July and August on a football calendar. Following a stellar 2022 campaign, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been stellar so far during training camp, looking more confident than ever.

Aiyuk, playing in all 17 games last fall, had 78 receptions for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns and came into his own during his third season with the franchise. No matter who was under center, Aiyuk was the team's most consistent pass catcher over the course of the entire season. It became clear that Aiyuk worked on his route running, as his ability to create space against any cornerback became evident.

So far during training camp, Aiyuk has maintained his presence in the 49ers offensive scheme. According to Kyle Posey with Ninersnation, Aiyuk has been a main target in scrimmages and involved in almost every drive against a live defense, breaking down defensive backs with a balance between stellar footwork and speed.

"This is my fourth year in this offense, third offseason in this offense," Aiyuk said. "And then the work that I felt like I put in, and then also the success that I've had in the years, put it all together and (confidence is) what you get for sure."

Aiyuk credits his familiarity with the offense for allowing him to focus more on his physicality. At camp, this is evident from plays where he is able to rip the ball away from cornerbacks in the air, an area of his game the franchise has yet to see.

"Really crispy routes. Way better than I even thought he was," said San Francisco's newest cornerback Isaiah Oliver, per NBC Sports Bay Area. Oliver added, "And I knew that he was already good, but seeing it up close and personal every day from OTAs to now, I think he's become such a better receiver than he was when he first got in the NFL, for sure."

Aiyuk, who is in his last year of a rookie deal with the franchise, will likely pursue a larger contract at the end of the season. With fellow 2019 draft class member Nick Bosa also due for an extension, the 49ers will have to be strategic with how they spend their money. Not to mention that San Francisco extended wide receiver Deebo Samuel prior to this season, which will make it difficult to pay the young Aiyuk.

This could be the main reason why Aiyuk has shined during training camp. Given the 49ers' current cap situation, it will be difficult for him to make the type of money he could be looking for in the Bay Area. He has improved every season in the league and we could see a breakout campaign this year, with Aiyuk earning his way to the big bucks.

However, for right now Aiyuk is focused on the present and being everything for the 49ers they need him to be. With Samuel and Aiyuk on the outside, George Kittle at the tight end and running back Christian McCaffrey as a utilityman, the 49ers have their best chance to win right now. If Aiyuk can compete as a top wide receiver in football alongside the other team's weapons, the sky's the limit. And so far, it sounds like he's ready to step up.
