The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line was one of the bigger surprises for the 2024 squad. And now that General Manager Jason Licht has a brand new contract extension, it might be time to further secure the future of the team’s O-Line.
The Buccaneers’ offense is primed for a breakout year, with a healthy dose of continuity and talent returning from last season. Under new OC Josh Grizzard, Baker Mayfield is set to lead a potent unit that’s hungry for success.
The offensive line’s stellar performance was a crucial factor in last season’s success, and it’s time to recognize the players who made it happen.
According to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, one additional offseason move for the Buccaneers should be extending Luke Goedeke’s contract.
“Tristan Wirfs is the anchor of the Tampa Bay offensive line, but Goedeke has been playing very well recently,” Schatz said. “Last season, he ranked 27th among qualifying tackles in pass block win rate (89.5%) and was above average in run block win rate (75.3%). Goedeke has one year left on his rookie contract, so it would be good for the Bucs to lock him in long term.”
With $26.6 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap, the Buccaneers currently have the financial flexibility to finalize a contract extension for Luke Goedeke. Based on Spotrac’s valuation, a potential deal could be worth $16.5 million annually, with a four-year, $66 million contract appearing to be a likely target.
Would the Buccaneers be willing to part ways with such money?
Will the Buccaneers shell out that kind of money for Luke Goedeke? Given the offense’s reliance on their line to protect Baker Mayfield and create running lanes for Bucky Irving and Rachaad White, it’s likely this topic has already been discussed behind the scenes. With Todd Licht signing his extension, perhaps it’s now time for the Buccaneers to prioritize one for Goedeke.
Luke Goedeke has seen his game continue to improve throughout his young career. Because of this, extending him now only makes sense for the Buccaneers, especially with the year by year rising cost of offensive tackles.
