Should the NY Jets trade for Romeo Doubs?

The 2025 NFL draft is in the rearview mirror, and the New York Jets roster is mostly set. While they addressed some key needs, the Jets still have a glaring hole at pass catcher opposite of Garrett Wilson.

General manager Darren Mougey drafted tight end Mason Taylor in the second round, which improved the situation, but the Jets still need help, especially if Allen Lazard reunites with Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh.

There aren’t too many options left in free agency at this point. As such, the Jets may look to the trade market for a solution.

On Monday, Bleacher Report listed four trades that “should happen” before the start of the 2025 season.

One of those featured the Jets landing Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

“The Green Bay Packers receivers room was already crowded heading into the draft, and the team came out of it with even more bodies to pack in,” wrote Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay.

“After selecting Matthew Golden at No. 23 overall—becoming the first Green Bay wideout to be selected on Day 1 in over two decades—and Savion Williams in the third round, the organization finds itself with a logjam it must clear before training camp kicks off. … With other talents such as Dontayvion Wicks and veteran free-agent pickup Mecole Hardman also in the mix, Doubs appears to be a prime trade candidate this offseason.”

Given the Jets’ need and Doubs’ talent, this would be a no-brainer for the Jets if the price makes sense.

It is worth noting that the article correctly predicted the Dallas Cowboys’ trade for George Pickens.

Should the Jets follow suit with the Doubs trade?

Romeo Doubs makes perfect sense for the Jets

Despite being on the trade block, Doubs is no slouch.

Since being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft, Doubs has produced an average of 49 receptions, 567 yards, and five touchdowns per season (despite missing eight career games). In 13 games this past season, he caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Packers in receptions per game (3.5).

However, the depth chart is crowded now that the Packers drafted wide receivers in the first and third rounds of the 2025 draft. Doubs was already competing for targets against Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Christian Watson. One of these players could become expendable, and Doubs is the likeliest candidate since he is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

This presents an excellent opportunity for the Jets. Aside from Garrett Wilson, it’s hard to expect any other players on the team to eclipse 500 receiving yards in 2025. Doubs has consistently hit that threshold and flashed the potential to do more.

Two traits that will definitely appeal to the Jets are Doubs’ run blocking and contested catch ability. Doubs has graded as an above-average run blocker (per Pro Football Focus) in each of the last two seasons. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound receiver also set a career high in contested catch rate in 2024 at 64.7% (tied for 13th among 110 qualified receivers).

However, no player available for trade is without faults. Doubs doesn’t offer much after the catch and is in the final year of his rookie contract. Concerningly, the Packers gave Doubs a one-game suspension in 2024 for skipping two practices due to frustration with his role. Overall, he’s missed eight games in three seasons.

While these concerns are valid, the upside is worth the risk to a team in the Jets’ position. Doubs’ potential availability is more a credit to the Packers for acquiring and developing so many receivers. Few available wide receivers can match his consistent production or upside.

What would a trade look like? And would an extension follow?

As with all trades, it comes down to price. Thankfully, for the Jets, Doubs shouldn’t cost too much to acquire. The package for Pickens wasn’t unreasonable, costing Dallas a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick (the Cowboys also received a 2027 sixth-round pick with Pickens).

Wide receivers have been on the move across the league. In total, 17 have been traded since the start of last year. Almost all of them were moved for day three draft picks, with only the league’s best receivers pushing into the first two days of the draft.

Based on these factors, a reasonable trade package for Doubs could include a sixth-round pick in 2026 and 2027. The Jets lack a fifth-round pick in 2026, so two sixths would get the job done.

Would the Jets sign Doubs to an extension?

Beyond the trade comes the potential extension. Doubs is in the final year of his rookie deal and is only owed $3.6 million. However, Spotrac projects his market value as $11.9 million, which would rank 32nd among wide receivers.

Wide receivers are expensive, but an extension of this value for Doubs would be difficult to stomach. While a cheaper deal is possible, it’s unlikely considering what young receivers have gotten on the open market in recent years. Just this offseason, Dyami Brown netted a one-year, $10 million deal after posting 30 receptions for 308 yards and one touchdown in 2024.

The Jets have to be smart with several key players headed for free agency. Not to mention, their young stars are due for extensions.

This could present a different opportunity for the Jets.

If Doubs plays well in New York and receives a contract similar to what Spotrac projects, the Jets could receive a compensatory pick in return. Contracts in Doubs’ projected range ($11-12 million per year) could net as high as a fifth-round pick, according to Over The Cap.

A potential scenario is the Jets rent Doubs for the year and get a 2027 fifth-round pick back after his departure. This is similar to what the Jets did with defensive end Haason Reddick. After trading a third-round pick to acquire him, they will likely receive a compensatory fourth-round pick after his surprising payday.

This is a gamble, but the most important factor is having Doubs’ impact on the field. As the Jets aim to give Justin Fields his best chance to succeed, he needs as many weapons as possible. Doubs would strengthen a Jets pass-catching unit that looks shaky at the moment.
