Should the Tennessee Titans consider benching Cam Ward?

The 2025 No. 1 overall pick is 3-17 as a starter and just cost his team a winnable game. A timeline for the Titans’ biggest decision is taking shape.

The Tennessee Titans are 0-3. Their latest loss coming directly as a result of the quarterback giving away the game.

That makes Cam Ward, again, the biggest focal point of discussion surrounding this franchise and its failures.

The question that must be asked is no longer just whether or not he can improve. Now, we must keep an eye on if (or when) the Titans should consider sitting him down.

Ward as a starter since arriving in Tennessee as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft has been disastrous. It is not to say that the player Ward can be won’t continue to develop. But in 20 career starts, Ward is 3-17.

Former quarterback Will Levis, treated as a borderline football war criminal in Tennessee went 5-16 as the Titans’ quarterback before they jettisoned him this offseason.

Through three games in 2026, Ward is completing 62.5% of his passes for 504 total yards.

His 5.7 yards per attempt is paltry and roughly where he sat last season. Two passing touchdowns, one interception (the backbreaker in Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants), and two rushing scores is not good enough.

He directly lost Tennessee the game in Week 3.

Robert Saleh is not considering a change, but the conversation is valid

I asked Titans coach Robert Saleh in the postgame press conference at what point he has to consider sitting the quarterback if the team doesn’t start winning.

Saleh was quick to say no, they are not taking any such considerations right now. There is reason and logic to that. I am not saying Ward has to be benched. But there is something to be said about what is in the best interest of the player if he continues to flounder, and what is in the best interest of the other 52 players on the active roster, the coaches, and everyone trying to win a football game when the quarterback can’t get it done.

The numbers paint a grim picture. Per a Titans fan account (@JakeandBall): 36 NFL quarterbacks have played 700+ snaps since 2023. Cam Ward, in that time period, understanding that Cam didn’t come into the league until 2025, is last in EPA per play out of 36, last in adjusted EPA per play, last in success rate, last in completion percentage over expectation.

All those negatives come with no tangible benefits to date.

The game-losing throw was the culmination of a larger problem

Ward had a chance to throw the game-winning touchdown. 

Instead, he rolled to his left, and threw it right to Giants safety Javon Holland to seal a win for New York. 

I have seen the cut-up of the throw several times. Receiver Elic Ayomanor was running from right to left with a defender in coverage, and Ward put a bad ball on him. It was still the wrong decision because inside the Giants’ 10-yard line, the Titans had two timeouts left and green grass in front of Ward.

He was not going to reach the end zone on a scramble, but they still had two more opportunities. 

Instead, he did the one thing he has consistently avoided all season: he put the football in harm’s way. He threw it directly to a defender. Saleh, on Monday, said Ward did not see Holland in the way the play developed.

His offensive line play has been sufficient.

Ward is the fourth-least-pressured quarterback in football so far this season. The biggest issue is that he is not consistently accurate, and he is not elevating anyone around him.

You can talk about the roster being insufficient, but Ward is equally as bad as the parts surrounding him. He cannot use those things as an excuse because he is not good enough to overcome them.
