The SMU Mustangs are one of the newer power four college football teams that are quickly rising to the top. They were an American Athletic Conference (AAC) team before this year, where they recently moved to the ACC. Even though the ACC seems to be the weakest of the power four when it comes to football, for now at least, they have quickly become a dominant team.
And, that's in large part because of what head coach Rhett Lashlee is doing there with the program down in Dallas, Texas. He's becoming one of the more respected head coaches in the country, is recruiting well, and putting production out on the field as well.
This year the Mustangs are 8-1 and 5-0 in conference play, with their one loss coming as a close one to BYU, who is ranked 9th in the College Football Playoff Rankings. They are a good team and could be set to play in the playoffs under this new 12-team format, as they currently rank 13th.
And, to make things even bigger, they just got a big get in terms of recruiting.
Does everyone remember USC Trojans quarterback and Heisman winner Matt Leinart? Well, this will surely make you feel old. The Mustangs have landed his son, QB Cole Leinart from Los Angeles, California. The three-star QB is a guy they are too excited about, and a source close to the SMU program told me exactly how they feel about him.
Cole has very good arm talent at the high school level, he can be rolling out, throw off his back foot, and still hit a throw 40 + yards downfield. He’s not a statue either, he is easily capable of scampering and picking up some yards with his feet. He has every tool you’re looking to develop at the next level. They're excited to have him in the building.
The Mustangs are in line to have a really good squad over these next few years, and can really make some noise this year. Landing a guy like Leinart will help them in so many ways on the field and off the field. The Mustangs are doing their thing, for sure.
