For the better part of a decade Devin Hester was the best return ace that the NFL had ever seen. He was so dynamic for the Chicago Bears that he was at times considered the best weapon on the team. Last year he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, but this year Hester's son received an honor that might mean even more to him.
Yesterday, Hester's son Drayon Hester revealed that he received a scholarship offer from the University of Miami (FL). It's the same school that Hester himself attended from 2003 to 2005, during which he earned All-American and All-ACC honors as a return ace.
"Extremely blessed to receive my first division 1 offer to the University of Miami," Drayton Hester shared on Instagram.
The Hall of Famer himself shared some highlights and well-wishes that his son received, including this photo of Drayton holding up a Miami jersey while wearing a Miami hat.
It's pretty hard to argue in favor of anyone but Hester being the greatest return ace in NFL history. He owns several of the most important records at the position in league history - most total return touchdowns (20), most punt return touchdowns (14) and most return touchdowns in a season (six).
Hester was a four-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection at the returner position and is widely regarded as one of the fastest NFL players of the 21st century. He also has the distinction of being the first-player to ever receive a 100 speed rating in the Madden NFL video game franchise (Madden NFL 08).
As a rookie in 2006, Hester's six six touchdowns helped the Bears win several games en route to making the Super Bowl for the first time since 1985. He promptly showed the world why he was the best return man in the league by returning the game's opening kickoff for a touchdowns. Chicago would lose the game, but Hester's moment would endure as one of the most memorable Bears plays in NFL history.
Just because Drayton Hester received an offer to Miami, it doesn't mean he'll necessarily go there. For starters, Drayton Hester isn't even close to committing to college, as he is part of the 2031 recruiting class.
While Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was overwhelmingly polite to Hester in their FaceTime meeting where he offered him the scholarship, there isn't even a guarantee that Cristobal will still be in Miami by the time Hester is ready to commit.
“No. 1, congratulations on busting your butt and doing all the things that you’ve been doing at such a young age,” Cristobal said. “I know you guys have got a big game coming up but I wanted to call you myself and let you know, face to face, man to man, that we’re offering you a scholarship to Miami and we would love you to be a Miami Hurricane… You are that guy. I’m going to recruit you like an absolute madman and I want you to lead the class when it’s your time.”
But if and when Drayton Hester does pick a college, we'll be rooting for him. We know his dad will too.
