Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders are nowhere close to agreeing on a new deal before the start of training camp, according to recent reports. One sports agent revealed the potential measuring stick that could get something rubber-stamped.

McLaurin missed voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp to get some extra long-term financial security that his production deserves. The Commanders haven't found any middle ground as yet, but there's not much concern among the fan base.

Deals like this are complicated, especially considering McLaurin will turn 30 years old in September. But they get done eventually.

Sports agent believes one factor could end Terry McLaurin's contract standoff with Commanders

Joel Corry from CBS Sports went in-depth about the negotiations that typically occur in situations like this. He believes the stalemate can be resolved by examining others who made the second or first-team All-Pro last season. That'll still be north of $30 million per season, but it's the going rate these days.

One way to try to help resolve the stalemate between McLaurin and the Commanders could be to look at the contracts of the six wide receivers named first- or second-team All-Pro last season. Collectively, these six wide receivers are signed to extensions with $722.61 million of new money for 22 new contract years to average $32,845,909 per year. The oldest of these wide receivers at signing, excluding McLaurin, was [A.J.] Brown. He turned 27 a couple of months after he got his deal. The other four were either 25 or close to being 25 when they signed.Joel Corry

Corry added that it's hard to envisage a scenario where McLaurin accepts less than $30 million per season. It's his last big contract, and he's an integral part of the Commanders' plans. The former third-round pick out of Ohio State is the embodiment of the new regime's culture shift. Not paying would cause potentially serious ramifications.

We're still a couple of weeks away from the start of Washington's training camp. One would expect talks to ramp up in the coming days, but McLaurin's supposedly willing to sit out more of the Commanders' pivotal preparations for the upcoming campaign unless he gets what he's worth.

Age could be the biggest stumbling block here. Paying veterans approaching the tail-end of their careers comes with risk. However, McLaurin showed no signs that he's going to fall off the proverbial performance cliff anytime soon.

Adam Peters will get something worked out. It'll be interesting to see what compromise is eventually reached, but the most important thing is making sure McLaurin is happy and hungry to help the Commanders get over the hump in 2025.

That's the one that shouldn't change.
