Russell Wilson Named Giants’ Starting QB as Training Camp Kicks Off

The New York Giants’ 2025 training camp has started, and nobody is questioning the quarterback: it is Russell Wilson, a veteran. On Wednesday, head coach Brian Daboll clarified that Wilson is the team’s clear-cut starting quarterback, closing any speculation or quarterback question over the summer.

Russell Wilson’s Leadership and Experience

Russell Wilson is a 10-time Pro Bowl player and fiercely competitive leader who signed a one-year contract with the Giants during this offseason’s free agency with the obvious ideals of becoming the starter. Wilson has not been around too long, but has quickly made a name for himself in the locker room and as a coach to young players. His attitudes towards work and champion-like attitude are already showing results, as evidenced by the strong off-season throwing workouts and his interaction with other teammates.

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers (who shares a locker right next to Wilson) also raved about his leadership: “To get great passes from him and see his leadership, I understand now why he’s been doing it for so long… Having that mentor on my side is an extra challenge to be better.”

The Quarterback Room and Rookie Development

The Giants have also overstocked their room with quarterbacks other than Wilson, including veteran Jameis Winston and first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart.  A product of the 25th pick of the 1st round of the 2025 NFL Offseason Draft, Dart is expected to be used as a backup during the season, to Wilson. Dart spent most of his practice-time taking second-team snaps on the first day of camp on Monday. He went 3-of-7 in the air, with an interception. Coaching staff members underline the advantages of being on the bench to learn in the company of veterans before seeing too much playing time.

According to general manager Joe Schoen, the time at which Dart will start playing games in the NFL will be determined per his development and the performance of Wilson, as he mentioned that the development of the young one is a priority, and patience is also important.

Looking Ahead

The entry of Wilson and the fact that he is definitely a starter brings stability in an attack that was unable to run last season with the addition of a quarterback merry-go-round. Daniel Jones, the starter last year, was benched by the coach and released, leading to a change in the quarterback room.

Now that Wilson has been in the driver’s seat with a star-studded team, the Giants will hope to initiate a new era of competitiveness. Wilson explained it this way: “I’m focused on being the best version of me every day… helping our football team win and elevating our mentality with a championship mindset.”

As the training camp continues, Giants fans will be looking with hope that Wilson and this new re-tooled offense will bring success to East Rutherford.
