The Washington Commanders are loaded in so many ways, having quickly built their Jayden Daniels-led roster into a true Super Bowl contender in just one season.
But, there is a gaping hole in that locker room, along the defensive line - specifically when it comes to pass rusher.
Washington lost Dante Fowler Jr. to free agency, inexplicably letting him return to the enemy Dallas Cowboys. Maybe there is an angle here we're unaware of, but that still strikes us as shocking given Fowler's familial relationship with coach Dan Quinn.
As you may know, Quinn was a position coach at the University of Florida back in the day when Fowler played there. They grew so close that Thanksgiving dinner for the kid was at the Quinn house.
How that - and his 10.5 sacks for the Commanders last year - didn't translate into retaining him ... we do not know.
Washington didn't really address the position during the 2025 NFL Draft, either.
But now comes an opportunity - and one our NFL insider Mike Fisher views as a "no-brainer.''
Former first-overall pick Jadeveon Clowney was projected to be an all-time great star when he came out of South Carolina. As Clowney enters his 12th season in the league, that has yet to happen.
But he has recorded 58 sacks in his career, and he is a three-time Pro Bowler.
At least that is what Brad Crawford from CBS Sports argued this week.
And last year, he did play and start in 14 games last season for the Carolina Panthers after having appeared in all 17 games during the 2023 season for the Baltimore Ravens the year before.
Said Fisher: "Washington isn't just a needy team here; the Commanders are starving for Clowney. He wouldn't turn a weakness into a strength, but he'd be one small step that fits Washington's championship push.''
Maybe coach Quinn wants to see what he's got on the field first. But we think Washington already knows ... and we think it's not good enough in this one spot.
