State Of The Buffalo Bills Roster: Offensive Line
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

In 2023, the Buffalo Bills offensive line was the best it’s been in recent years, and that’s all thanks to two things: (1) how well Brandon Beane has drafted, particularly O’Cyrus Torrence and Spencer Brown, and (2) OL Coach Aaron Kromer and his development of the young linemen. Now, the Bills’ issue this off-season is going to be sustaining that production, and finding young players to replace the vets. Mitch Morse has already said he plans to be back next season, but what about beyond that?

Dion Dawkins

Dawkins has been the cornerstone of this offensive line since arriving in Buffalo in 2017. Since then, he’s been to three Pro Bowls and even has two TDs to his name. Dawkins, 29, still has plenty left in the tank, and is on the final year of a four year/$58M deal.

Connor McGovern

McGovern was a super underrated signing by the Bills last off-season. McGovern came to Buffalo after spending the first part of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He had a very good season with Buffalo, allowing only two sacks, and four penalties. McGovern is going into the second year of his three year/$22M deal.

Mitch Morse

Since arriving in Buffalo in 2019, Morse has been one of the most consistent Centers in the league. In 2023, Morse allowed just one sack through 1,128 snaps, good enough for 25th in the league, per PFF. Morse is going into the final year of his two year/$19.5M extension and will be 32 years old next season.

O’Cyrus Torrence

Torrence is one of Brandon Beane’s best draft picks in recent memory. Playing every snap of his rookie season, Cybo was one of the strongholds of this OL. And he’s only going to grow next year with Morse and Brown next to him.

Spencer Brown

Brown really came back strong last season after a rocky start to his young career. After dealing with a back injury for the majority of the 2022 season, and part way into training camp, Brown was a dominant force on the Bills OL in 2023. Brown is going into a contract year, and will be trying to get every last penny he can in his new contract.

David Edwards

Edwards spent the 2023 season as Buffalo’s sixth offensive lineman, coming in mostly as an extra blocker on run plays. With Edwards’ contract expired, and currently an UFA, the Bills could bring Edwards back on a cheap deal to compete for the backup position again next season.

Ryan Bates

Bates has been a crucial piece to this offensive line since arriving in 2019. Playing all three positions on the line, he has made himself invaluable to the Bills offense. In 2023, he served as the backup Center to Mitch Morse, and gave Buffalo an experienced vet to step in if needed. Bates is going into the third year of a four year/$17M deal.

Ryan Van Demark

Van Demark came to Buffalo after being released by the Indianapolis Colts during their final roster cuts in 2022. He didn’t see any playing time until this past season. Van Demark played 46 snaps on offense, while lining up on Special Teams for 22 snaps. He’s on the final year of a two year/$1.6M deal.

Alec Anderson

Anderson, much like Van Demark, didn’t find his way to the active roster until this season However, unlike Van Demark, Anderson was a healthy scratch throughout the season. Anderson is currently on the same two year/$1.6M deal.

Germain Ifedi

Ifedi split time between the roster and the practice squad in 2023, only being released to make room for DaQuan Jones to return from IR. He did not see any action with the Bills either, as he was a healthy scratch every week. Ifedi is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, and has not been given a reserve/futures deal by the Bills.

Kevin Jarvis

Jarvis fell short of making the roster this summer, later signing to the Buffalo Bills practice squad before the season began. He started his career with the Detroit Lions in 2022 as a UDFA, and never played a snap for them due to an undisclosed injury. Jarvis will look to make the team this year, and use his big 6’6”, 325 lb frame to his advantage during the preseason.

Richard Gouraige

Gouraige signed with the Buffalo Bills as a UDFA in April, but remained on the practice squad throughout the season. Gouraige provides some versatility to the Bills OL, as he played both Tackle and Guard in college. He is on a reserve/futures contract.

Greg Mancz

Mancz has been with the Bills off and on for the better part of two years now. However, he has not seen any action on game days. Mancz spent last season on the practice squad after losing his battle to Alec Anderson. Mancz has not signed a reserve/futures contract with Buffalo.

Tommy Doyle

Doyle had his 2023 season cut way too short, as he suffered a torn ACL during the preseason, his second season-ending injury of his career. Doyle practiced at both Tackle and Guard during the summer in hopes to give himself a bigger advantage among the depth linemen. He is going into the final year of his rookie deal.

Overview

Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown should have the tackle spots locked down for the foreseeable future, while Connor McGovern is still young enough to hold down his LG spot with O’Cyrus Torrence for the next few seasons as well. While the Buffalo Bills starting OL is set for at least this year, the Bills will need to look towards the future in some positions, most notably Center. If they really like Ryan Bates to take over the starting job from Mitch Morse, that’s great. But they’ll need to make a decision sooner rather than later.
