Three players for Steelers to watch after big roster cuts

Like the rest of the NFL on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers finished with their wave of roster cuts, as they now have 53 players currently under contract. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and the league will show why that is the case over these next few days as many players try to find new homes. Former Steelers players like Beanie Bishop Jr. will have to try to find jobs elsewhere, and Pittsburgh will find other promising youngsters and veterans that they love to come in and fill a hole. Maybe they even try to bring Bishop back after he makes it through waivers.

Cole Strange, OL

The Steelers got questionable play from backup center Ryan McCollum during training camp and preseason, so they may be willing to bring in former first-round pick Cole Strange, who is a versatile interior lineman. He had been constantly injured during his time with the New England Patriots. He needed a fresh start, and developing as a backup in Pittsburgh could be exactly what he needs to thrive.

Strange was seen as a strange pick at the time, but he still had plenty of upside. The problem was he was rushed on an offensive line that just needed bodies, and he was not ready for a baptism by fire. At the very least, it may be worth it to give him a tryout and/or put him on the practice squad to see if he still has the ability to develop as an interior lineman, including center.

Hunter Renfrow, WR

If the Steelers still truly want a veteran wideout, they could look toward Hunter Renfrow, who was released by the Carolina Panthers. Pittsburgh did get a good scouting report on him, as the two teams played each other in Preseason Week 3. Renfrow was a longshot to make the roster due to all the young, highly drafted receivers that the Panthers have on their roster.

Renfrow has been battling back from a major health scare that forced him to miss all of 2024. Despite being cut, his reviews during training camp and preseason were mostly positive. Even with everything he has been through, this most likely will not be his last stop in the NFL.

Pittsburgh could use a warrior like him to come in and help out with a young receiver room. However, one has to wonder why Pittsburgh didn't try to acquire him before he joined the Panthers.

Tank Lichtenhan, OT

The Steelers are no strangers to signing players who spent time with the Baltimore Ravens. With the need for offensive tackle depth after Calvin Anderson's injury, they may have found their man, if they can pry him away from Baltimore, as they want to sign him to the practice squad. His name is Gerard "Tank" Lichtenhan, and he is definitely a tank.

Lichtenhan was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens back in May after being named Offensive Lineman of the Year for the Pac-12 in 2024. If the Steelers can find a way to convince him to switch sides in the rivalry, they may have another version of Alejandro Villanueva on their own practice squad or active roster.

Even though the Steelers' 53-man roster is already set, they rarely ever go into Week 1 with the same lineup as they have after cutdown day is over. There is a chance that any of these players get signed, especially Strange and Lichtenhan, who can be claimed off waivers if Pittsburgh truly thinks that highly of them. There is no certainty that either of those players get signed, but based on what the Steelers have been looking for, they may be on their radar.
