Steelers Alex Highsmith Detailed Decision To Take Part In 2023 OTAs While In The Midst Of Seeking A Contract Extension
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Alex Highsmith had a breakout season for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022, notching 14.5 sacks to go along with 12 tackles for loss. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the former third-round pick hopes to sign a long-term contract extension to remain with the Steelers for the foreseeable future. While many players in his situation have steered clear of taking part in OTAs this offseason, Highsmith has done the opposite, taking part in individual drills simply to have the opportunity to refine his craft as a pass rusher.

During a recent interview with Missi Matthews of steelers.com, Highsmith explained why he has attended 2023 OTAs.

"That's just who I am. I love working and that's always who I've been. Coming from college, being a walk-on, I've had to work hard for everything in my life. Being here with the guys means a lot to me," Highsmith said.

Highsmith Has Earned A Long-Term Deal With The Steelers

Needless to say, Highsmith taking part in OTAs speaks volumes about the type of player he is. Coming off a tremendously impressive third year in the NFL, he has virtually nothing to prove by taking part in the activities but chooses to do so anyway. With a healthy TJ Watt back in the fold and a vastly improved outside linebacker room, Highsmith is poised to carry the momentum from last season and help the Steelers' defense be an elite group in 2023. During the interview, he explains how he plans to do just that.

"Continue to perfect my craft, continue to add new moves to my arsenal, continue to get stronger and faster like I have. I think that's just so important to never be content, never get complacent, because when you do, that's when you'll fail," Highsmith answered.

Highsmith has steadily improved over the first three years with the Steelers and is poised to continue this trend in 2023. While he will likely never receive the same league-wide recognition as Watt, he is an extremely talented pass rusher who is equally effective against the run. Furthermore, he is beloved in the Steelers' locker room and has demonstrated how committed he is to helping the team win.

In terms of what a new contract for Highsmith will cost the Steelers, there have been reports that the fourth-year pro may receive upwards of $15 million in annual average salary. This may seem like a hefty price to pay, especially when you consider how much the team is devoting financially to Watt, Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Steelers still have their starting quarterback, Kenny Pickett, on his rookie deal. As a result, many believe that a new contract for Highsmith will inevitably happen at some point this offseason.

Effective Pass Rushers Come At A Premium In The NFL; Highsmith Is No Different

Outside of quarterback, there is perhaps no more crucial position for NFL teams than pass rusher. With an AFC that is absolutely loaded with talented offenses, the need for a formidable group of edge defenders is critical. This is why signing Highsmith to a long-term deal makes sense for the Steelers. He has proven time and time again his ability to improve his playing ability, and the 2023 season is likely to be no different.

Optimistically speaking, Highsmith has only scratched the surface of his full potential as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the Steelers defense. If this is indeed the case, the team may be able to regain its title of having the most sacks of any team in the NFL in 2023. Regardless, one thing has been made abundantly clear over the past few weeks in regard to Highsmith, the guy is willing to do whatever it takes to win.

He is a team-first player who deserves to be a part of the Steelers' long-term plans. With both himself and Watt in the prime of their careers, fans may be able to witness one of the best pass-rushing duos in the history of the franchise this upcoming season.
