Steelers' Alex Highsmith discusses extension talks

Steelers LB Alex Highsmith is likely the next player in Pittsburgh to receive a big payday and he recently discussed the situation with negotiations ongoing.

When asked about his contract situation prior to the start of minicamp, Highsmith told reporters he "hopes the contract is done before training camp" so he can focus on football when the team puts on pads, via Steelers Depot.

Highsmith, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal, is coming off a career-high 14.5 sacks and a league-leading five forced fumbles. He also joined a select group of Steelers who have recorded 14+ sacks and at least five forced fumbles in a season.

In May, the 25-year-old expressed confidence in reaching a pact with the Steelers, saying he was "optimistic" the deal will get done, via ESPN's Brooke Pryor.

Highsmith's projected value is a four-year, $55.63 million contract, which is a nearly $14 million per year average, according to Spotrac.

The contract won't be cheap for Pittsburgh, but the team has $15.72 million in cap space. Although, the Steelers still to sign their first three picks from the 2023 NFL Draft.

If the Steelers believe Highsmith's 2022 season wasn't a fluke, they should certainly lock him up, cementing one of the best edge rushing duos in the league for years to come.
