Steelers Are Gambling On Roman Wilson Being The Solution To Wide Receiver, But Might Still Add At The Position
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a pivotal decision by drafting wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Following the trade of their star receiver Diontae Johnson early in the offseason, the team was in desperate need of another wide receiver. Rumors had circulated all offseason that the Steelers were looking to add a new target to complement George Pickens.

While no major acquisitions occurred, the Steelers did bring in depth pieces like Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson, and Scotty Miller. Though none of these names inspire significant confidence among Steelers fans, they are speedy receivers capable of filling the wide receiver three role in Pittsburgh.

The big question is whether Wilson can step up as a rookie and secure the second wide receiver spot on the roster. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo provided more insight into the team's plans during his appearance on the Post-Gazette's North Shore Drive podcast with Christopher Carter on Monday.

"If Roman Wilson doesn't step up and assume that number two job, then I think trade rumors and all that other stuff will resurface here later in the summer.”

Fittipaldo believes the organization is currently comfortable seeing what they have in Wilson. While Wilson has significant potential for a solid NFL career, asking a rookie third-round pick to start immediately is a tall order. The Steelers don't have many options on the roster. They also have Calvin Austin III, who still has much to prove before assuming any major role in 2024.

Wilson was a standout player at Michigan, playing a major role in the Wolverines' championship victory. Despite the college offense not being ideally suited for him, he managed to thrive within the system. Known as a team-first player, Wilson loves blocking and helping his teammates in any way he can. With his great attitude and work ethic, he should have no problems fitting in with the Steelers, regardless of his role.

If the Steelers could add an experienced wide receiver capable of starting alongside Pickens, Wilson as the third wide receiver would be an exciting prospect. However, as it stands today, the Steelers lack that depth. Fittipaldo believes that no new additions to the wide receiver room are likely until later in the summer.

OTAs are set to begin this week, and the Steelers will start truly assessing how solid they can be with Wilson in his role. If no new additions come, it's expected that Wilson will be heavily relied upon to produce in 2024. Another option for the Steelers is tight end Pat Freiermuth. Although Freiermuth hasn't had a major role in the offense early in his career, the hiring of Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator could change that. Smith is known for involving tight ends in his offensive schemes, suggesting that Freiermuth will see an increased role as a receiver in 2024.

Steelers Have Had A Great Offseason

The Steelers have had a productive offseason, bringing in new personnel and improving in every area of the game. They have strengthened the offense with new quarterbacks, bolstered the defense with the addition of Patrick Queen, and made enhancements on special teams. However, they still have gaps in the wide receiver room and at the nickelback position.

In the NFL, it's unrealistic to have stars at every position, but ensuring the wide receiver position is filled with playmakers is crucial. The Steelers have plenty of speed but lack proven standouts in their wide receiver corps. It appears they will adopt a wide receiver-by-committee approach, utilizing players like Austin III, Watkins, and Jefferson. Smith, the new offensive coordinator, will need to get creative with the speed at his disposal to ensure an improved offense in 2024.

Despite these challenges, there is significant optimism about the Steelers' outlook for the 2024 season. Adding one more experienced wide receiver with a proven track record could drastically change the dynamics for Pittsburgh, making them even more competitive.
