Steelers Could Revive First-Round Bust's Career In Strong System
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers are always looking for diamonds in the rough. Sure, the team could always rely on first-round picks, but you can't fill the entire roster with your own top picks. Good general managers can find playmakers in the first round, but the best front office managers can find talent anywhere and everywhere. Omar Khan has done great in his limited time with the Steelers so far, and he has already started looking for those value players, including Justin Fields. There are still plenty of guys like that available to boost the team.

Bleacher Report has its own ideas of players that could bounce back in a new system. While the Steelers are more than set at the edge rusher position, the franchise could still bring in a former draft bust that can make it on the 53-man roster and show off his talent.

"Tryon-Shoyinka's early success and pressure rates would hint at some untapped potential that just might not be reached in Todd Bowles' defense. The Steelers' primary needs might be at wide receiver and corner, but edge depth is a sneaky spot for improvement. T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith obviously do the heavy lifting, and Nick Herbig will eat up some snaps, but the Steelers don't necessarily have a replacement for what Markus Golden gave them last season. Tryon-Shoyinka would have the opportunity to learn under a coaching staff that has helped Highsmith become a productive starter alongside a superstar in Watt."

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has not lived up to his first-round pedigree during his three-year career, and he has even lost snaps to younger players, as he only played 51% of the defensive snaps for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While he has been a solid depth piece for the Buccaneers' defense, Tryon-Shoyinka might still want a change of scenery to start over and show what he has.

Why Would Steelers Trade For Tryon-Shoyinka?

For starters, Tryon-Shoyinka's value is very low. The Steelers can trade very little in assets to acquire him. Bleacher Report even has the projected trade being Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick going to Pittsburgh in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Khan's history shows that it is more likely that the Steelers trade away a sixth-round pick for the package, and it could be a conditional pick as well.

The Steelers aren't a team to turn down quality depth, especially if it comes cheap. While Nick Herbig will likely get more snaps, the Steelers still need a replacement for Markus Golden. Tryon-Shoyinka can fill in that depth role and lessen the workload of the Steelers' high-end edge rushers. He would have to compete with Jeremiah Moon in training camp, but if he can win the job, he could be yet another stud in a loaded pass rush.

While Tryon-Shoyinka won't get all the snaps that he's hoping for in Pittsburgh, he could still develop well. The Steelers have three homegrown edge rushers that have been great for the Steelers. They clearly have an established system that works well for that position. Tryon-Shoyinka can boost his skillset and earn himself another contract, even if it's not in Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay.

The Steelers have not been shy about making trades to improve the team in the Khan era, whether it be a major trade or a small trade that goes under the radar. Granted, the team will likely wait until they see how the current edge rushers do in offseason minicamps, but if they don't think they have enough depth behind Herbig, they could easily pull the trigger on a trade.
