Steelers culture issues continue to arise after rookie starter refused to play in playoffs

In what has become an airing of grievances, the Pittsburgh Steelers' culture is starting to get exposed.

Players have made their feelings on the coaching staff's decisions well-known, and some have gone as far as to reject team wishes.

That's what rookie guard Mason McCormick did on Saturday according to Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show...

Mason McCormick wouldn't play with cast on

"I think Mason McCormick hit a block," Kaboly said on 93.7 The Fan. "He broke his hand and they wanted him to wear a cast. He wasn’t willing to do that so they said take a seat."

Now, I don't know about you, but it's tough to envision Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, or Ben Roethlisberger being able to play a game and refusing to do so, for whatever reason.

Maybe if McCormick plays, Pittsburgh doesn't win the game but they rush for more than 29 yards and don't allow four sacks against the Baltimore Ravens.

But even more concerning is the fact that questions about effort and open call outs of coaches persisted both intra and post-game on Saturday.

Patrick Queen, who is the team's defensive signal caller, and highest-paid free agent in franchise history, came under fire for his effort against his former team. So much so that he rightfully had someone in his camp tell the media that he was dealing with a bad case of the flu

"Really something that we talked about on the team that I feel like we need to do, [is] really just staying together as a team, not listening too much of the outside noise and the outside attention," Najee Harris said after the game on Saturday. "That's the fastest way to break up a team...

"...I think that's what really [happened], paying attention too much of what the media say rather than just doing what we gotta do. And I think that's one of the main things I feel like we could help us out, you know? 'Cause it's gonna be tough. There's gonna be times when you have faced some adversity. But the way you answer it is all that matters."

So whether it's Cordarrelle Patterson on Instagram, Najee, or Queen, there is something wrong with the core of this team right now. There is a lack of buy in, which is frankly concerning and could reopen the trade talks of HC Mike Tomlin because this is far from Pittsburgh Steelers football.
