Steelers DC Teryl Austin makes controversial decision heading into bye

The Steelers have some decisions to make during their Week 6 bye with several veterans underperforming and some young players continuing to make plays. However, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin decided to stick with what's not working.

When asked if rookie CB Joey Porter Jr. is ready to start, Austin replied, "Not right now. When the time comes it'll come."

The No. 32 overall pick in 2023 and son of former LB Joey Porter couldn't have done much more to prove he should be a starter with his limited action.

The rookie has allowed just one catch for 12 yards in 76 coverage snaps and made a touchdown-saving interception that aided a Pittsburgh comeback win against the Ravens in Week 5. He was also Pro Football Focus' highest-graded cornerback of the week for his lockdown performance.

It has been difficult for Porter Jr. to see the field consistently because of veteran cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace on the roster. However, they haven't done much to prove they should still be the weekly starters.

Wallace has allowed 25 receptions, which is the seventh-most in the NFL, according to PFF. His 42 targets are the second-most in the league, proving teams are continually picking on him.

Peterson, on the other hand, has allowed 16 catches on 28 targets, per PFF. The 33-year-old has continued to show his age and may not have as much gas left in the tank than the Steelers had hoped entering 2023.

Austin has been asked about Porter Jr.'s development and readiness every week but continues to say he isn't when the tape says otherwise. It seems fans will have to wait to see more of the rookie until he stacks a couple more strong performances.
