Steelers Former Offensive Tackle Mike Adams Detailed His Strong Relationship With Old Teammate David DeCastro
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

It's always nice to hear from former retired Pittsburgh Steelers players. Some are extremely involved in the spotlight such as ESPN analyst, Ryan Clark and Ben Roethlisberger with his recently started podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger. Others had very short careers unfortunately, but still were in the locker room and have the experiences to tell great stories to fans. That was the case on Monday when former offensive lineman, Mike Adams hopped on the All For Nothing podcast with host, Tyler Bossetti.

Adams was a second-round selection out of Ohio State University back in 2012. Many remember the scary stabbing incident that he was involved with in 2013 when he was held at gunpoint during a carjacking. He did not play in Pittsburgh for very long and was only on the Steelers from 2012 to 2014. He played in his final NFL season with the Chicago Bears in 2016.

He was heavily overshadowed during his time in Pittsburgh because of who was selected in the first round before him. Steelers' successful offensive guard, David DeCastro was taken by the organization with the 24th overall pick and played with the franchise from 2012 to 2020. He was an All-Pro two different seasons and made the Pro Bowl six times.

Adams went into detail regarding the 2015 back injury that forced him to miss the entire season. He suffered the injury before a practice and by the end of the day, he was unable to move. It was caused by a massive herniation, as he told Bossetti, in the L5-S1 disc in his back. He went into extreme detail and described it as basically the disc exploding into a bunch of chunks.

The two discussed his surgery and Bossetti was curious about the support he received from any of the Steelers players or coaches at the time. He woke up the morning after the procedure to several big names waiting to see him.

"I will say, when I woke up in the hospital the next morning, Coach Tomlin, Mr. Rooney, [Kevin] Colbert, the GM, and David DeCastro were at the hospital with my mom and grandma when I woke up."

It's awesome to hear about the care and concern that the biggest names in the organization had for Adams during a rough patch. He actually continued to talk about the bond between him and his fellow offensive lineman, DeCastro.

"David DeCastro, we trained together for the [NFL] Combine coming out of college and we get drafted [round] one, [round] two to the Steelers. We basically became like roommates for road games and camp and stuff like that."

DeCastro has been widely respected since being drafted and had a great career in Pittsburgh. Adams didn't stay for too long, but the two kept in touch and it has blossomed into a great friendship.

Adams touched on the duo's relationship.

"We formed like a really really good close strong friendship. Dave and I are still like really good to this day. We don't talk all the time, but we speak and when we talk, like, it's like we never... real friends."

The Entire Steelers Offensive Line Was There For Adams In His Time Of Need

While the relationship with DeCastro is extremely strong, Adams talked about how helpful the entire offensive line was. He brought up two key pieces of the unit and commended them for being there when he was dealing with his back injury.

"I will say, at the time, the other offensive linemen were there for me as well. Like Pouncey was there like, 'Yo bro, anything you need,' and Ramon Foster, great dude."

Did you know that Adams and DeCastro are still extremely close to this day?
