Steelers’ George Pickens Begging Pittsburgh To Let Him Wear A Sacred Number

The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines when they traded for Justin Fields, sparking curiosity among fans about which jersey number he would don in his new city. Fields, renowned for wearing number one during his time with the Chicago Bears, left fans wondering if he would continue the tradition in Pittsburgh. However, it was later disclosed that Fields would wear the number two, indicating that the Steelers may have restricted him from wearing the coveted number one.

The number one holds significant historical resonance in Pittsburgh, notably associated with the career of Steelers' kicker, Gary Anderson. Speculation abounds regarding the reasons behind the Steelers' reluctance to assign the number. 

Some attribute it to reverence for Anderson's contributions, while others suggest it reflects the organization's steadfast traditions, guarding the number from individualistic motives. Despite conjectures, the rationale behind the prohibition remains shrouded in mystery.

When the Steelers drafted George Pickens, who had previously sported the number one during his college tenure at Georgia, questions arose about his jersey selection upon joining the team. During a guest appearance on Arthur Moats' show in his rookie season, Pickens explained that he had been barred from wearing the number one.

"That's the number they gave me, to be honest. I tried to get number one but I think it's sacred or something like that." 

On Friday, Pickens took to his Instagram account to make a plea to the Steelers regarding the coveted number one jersey. Sharing a story featuring a digitally altered image of himself donning the number one jersey, Pickens tagged the Steelers' account, urging them to reconsider their stance with a simple "come on man."
