It is no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been in quarterback purgatory ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season.
There has yet to be a permanent, long-term solution since then, and it appears that will be the reality again in 2025. Many expect either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson to be the team's starting signal-caller in 2025, but no one is quite sure when the future Hall of Famer in Rodgers will decide if he wants to play in the Steel City or for the New York Giants. There also could be a mystery third team involved in the Rodgers sweepstakes.
Pittsburgh is in an extremely interesting predicament because Skylar Thompson is the only quarterback currently under contract for 2025. That is a tad concerning, with all due respect to the former Miami Dolphins quarterback. Any fans expecting news regarding Rodgers' decision could be waiting much longer than anticipated, which will leave a baste taste in the mouths of Steelers fans.
NFL Network's Peter Schrager gave an update on the fluid situation Wednesday morning on "Good Morning Football." While no one knows what is going on, the decision from Rodgers could come later than expected.
"Rodgers, we know is going somewhere," Schrager said. "And it might not just be a week [before he decides]. It might be two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. If you think you know what the Aaron Rodgers' timetable is, you know more than the Steelers or Giants do. I've spoken to sources on both sides and everyone's kind of got that shrug emoji. 'We're waiting, we're seeing, we're giving him space, let him decide.'"
There have been conflicting reports all over social media, but if Schrager is accurate in his reporting, the Steelers might be better off just agreeing to a contract with Wilson instead. The organization doesn't have the time to wait around and finish building the roster without a starting signal-caller. It wouldn't be received well in the Steel City if Rodgers were to selfishly hold up the rest of offseason planning.
Rodgers performed well at the end of the 2024 season while Wilson did not. This could be why Pittsburgh has an interest in the Super Bowl XLV champion. A veteran presence with above-average play on the field could lead to a much more consistent offense in 2025.
The problem is that the Steelers are still trying to be active in free agency, but they might be looked at as a questionable destination because teams need a formidable quarterback to win in the modern NFL.
While Schrager is a respected media personality, sometimes information received by insiders is not fully accurate. There has been another report out of New York suggesting that a decision could come very soon. Jordan Raanan covers the Giants for ESPN and is expecting something as soon as Wednesday.
The Aaron Rodgers situation does not appear to be a money thing from the Giants perspective. They are just waiting for his decision. A resolution is expected today.

At this point, all that Steelers fans want is a decision. Not knowing who Pittsburgh's quarterback will be in 2025 is concerning and leaves a massive hole in an offense that hasn't been successful lately. It also isn't the best solution to bring Wilson back given the recent headlines that he and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith did not truly see eye-to-eye.
