Around this time last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers were engaged in trade talks surrounding San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk.
And while that fell through, there seems to be another WR in the Bay that wants to be paid or go somewhere where he can be paid.
Leaving Omar Khan with the chance to both add a WR and make up for last offseason's debacle...
49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, per sources.49ers extended Jennings’ deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year.
- Adam Schefter, ESPN
Jennings, who just turned 28 years old last week, is coming off the best season of his career by far. With Brandon Aiyuk dealing with a knee injury, Jennings accumulated 975 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns (both career highs) on over 100 targets and 77 receptions.
If he's going to get a new deal, the time is now. In the final year of his contract, making a fraction of what even the median level salary of wide receivers are, the push from his representation is a smart one.
And if you're Omar Khan, this is a perfect opportunity to strike while the iron is hot. Jennings is not what Aiyuk was going to be if he made it to the Steelers.
That is what DK Metcalf is for. What Jennings can be is the perfect WR number two and complement to Metcalf. And, he would come a lot cheaper than Aiyuk, of whom the Steelers were going to be indebted for a premium pick and over $100m.
The 49ers would likely part ways for a fourth rounder or even less, and Jennings would likely settle for a three-year, $30m deal if we were hypothesizing.
This is the kind of move that you don't see coming, but you jump on when it arrives. It's an ideal fit for the Steelers, with a reasonable price and a chance for Khan and co. to make up for Aiyuk.
We'll see if they're interested.
