Steelers GM sheds light on 2023 backup QB plans

The Steelers have an important decision to make as to who will backup QB Kenny Pickett in 2023. However, general manager Omar Khan shed some light on Pittsburgh's plans at the NFL Combine.

Khan told reporters that he loves the way QB Mitchell Trubisky worked with Pickett and would like him to be around long-term, including beyond next season.

It may come as a surprise to some as the Steelers could save $8 million against the cap if the team were to move on from Trubisky.

Trubisky threw for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions this season and expressed his regret in signing with Pittsburgh after losing his starting spot to Pickett.

"Everything happened kind of quickly. I didn't really have a long time to think of the decision," he said. "I wish I would've taken some more time and not just signed the first day of free agency."

Either Trubisky has changed his mind about staying with the Steelers or the team is using it as a trade tactic.

It was already reported that Pittsburgh would consider trading Trubisky for a third or fourth-round pick, but with an underwhelming 2022 season, his market value might just not be there anymore.
