Heading into the 2025 NFL draft, there were many who thought the Pittsburgh Steelers could pursue Shedeur Sanders. With a new for a quarterback, Sanders would have made sense at some point in the draft.
Despite the rumored interest, it became clear that the Steelers did not want to draft Sanders.
Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round when the Cleveland Browns traded up to get him at No. 144 overall. For Pittsburgh, it was a sign of just how little the front office actually valued him.
With the draft being over for nearly a week, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac has spoken out with more details about the team's thoughts on Sanders.
“I can't tell you where he was in a pecking order, Rich, but I will tell you, despite what all the national people thought, they [the Steelers] did not intend to draft him," Dulac said. "You know, if he was there on the sixth round, and maybe...But you know the people that had him going to the Steelers and had him going at 21, that just wasn't going to happen. No quarterback was going at 21. That includes Jaxson Dart, who they did have a first-round grade on."
Dulac continued on, doubling down on his thoughts that Pittsburgh simply didn't value him higher than possibly a sixth-round pick.
"And you could see how many times they passed on him, if they were going to take him, they would have tried to take them in the fourth round. But it wasn't high on their list,” he said

Why did the @steelers ultimately pass on selecting Shedeur Sanders? Was he ever a possibility to land in Pittsburgh?#NFL #NFLDraft #HereWeGo pic.twitter.com/wr7GWA6hcY
Whether or not the Steelers were right remains to be seen. They'll have a first-hand look at that debate, with Sanders now playing in the AFC North.
Instead, they drafted former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round. Pittsburgh was happy with that pick.
Aaron Rodgers remains the name to watch for the Steelers following the draft.
