A Dec. 6 report revealed that the three-year contract extension that the Pittsburgh Steelers handed head coach Mike Tomlin in June 2024 includes a team option for 2027 that must be decided on by March 1, 2026.
During a Tuesday morning appearance on Pittsburgh radio station 102.5 WDVE, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette addressed information about Tomlin's deal going public when it did.
"First of all, that's coming from Mike Tomlin's agent because it's not coming from the Steelers, because they don't discuss anything that's going to happen after the season, during the season," Dulac said, per Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "So from that end, I know where that's coming from."
The update about Tomlin's status went public as media members, Pittsburgh fans and even some Steelers legends were suggesting that the club could and should part ways with the one-time Super Bowl champion head coach this coming January. Since that time, Tomlin guided the Steelers to a 27-22 win over the rival Baltimore Ravens that gave 7-6 Pittsburgh sole possession of first place in the AFC North standings. Meanwhile, the Ravens fell to 6-7.
Multiple reports from the first few days of December shared that it "would be a major, major surprise" if the Steelers showed Tomlin the door after the season. It sounds like that's still the case following Pittsburgh's win over Baltimore.
"Do I expect anything to happen? No, I don't," Dulac added about the working relationship between Tomlin and the Steelers. "But I've always said Mike Tomlin will be gone when Mike Tomlin decides he's had enough. I don't see the Steelers making any move in that regard unless the complete bottom would fall out. And I don't see that happening."
Tomlin's players routinely make it known they love playing for him, and his roster is coming off its biggest win of the season. Pittsburgh next hosts the 6-7 Miami Dolphins for a "Monday Night Football" game on Dec. 15. As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Steelers as three-point favorites for that matchup.
This coming Sunday, the Ravens will play at the 4-9 Cincinnati Bengals.
