George Pickens is out. Aaron Rodgers is ... does anyone really know? Does Rodgers himself even have any idea where or if he will play football in 2025?
The Pittsburgh Steelers rid themselves of one headache this week with the trading of their talented-but-temperamental receiver, but the migraine about their next quarterback lingers.
It's been two months since Russell Wilson up and left for the New York Giants to seemingly pave the way for Rodgers to Pittsburgh, and it's been two weeks since owner Art Rooney II said the future Hall of Famer "wants to come here" and that "we may get word soon."
Some are now speculating that Rodgers is for some reason waiting for NFL schedules to be released next week. Others think he's already made up his mind to retire at 41. Rodgers throwing to DK Metcalf is enough to get Steelers fans excited, but also tired of being held hostage.
Without him, they have veterans Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson and sixth-round rookie Will Howard on the depth chart.
“I know that (Rodgers) has stayed in relatively constant contact with Mike Tomlin,” NFL insider James Palmer wrote this week. “So, I do believe there’s enough things pointing that Aaron Rodgers would be the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
ESPN's Peter Schrager, meanwhile, says the Steelers are still clueless.
"Pittsburgh knows no more now than they did at the draft or before the draft," Schrager said on the Pat McAfee Show this week.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Ray Fittipaldo reported this week that while the door may still be open for Rodgers, the Steelers are losing sleep about him walking through it.
“He’s the best option available (Rodgers) and their only other option right now is Mason Rudolph," Fittipaldo wrote. "I honestly think it’s that simple. Believe me, they wouldn’t have their hearts broken if Aaron Rodgers retires, because they like Mason Rudolph."
