Steelers’ Justin Fields Is Uninterested In Backup Role: 'We Are Competing Against Each Other'
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a lot of noise this offseason, particularly in their quarterback room. They signed veteran Russell Wilson to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum and traded a conditional sixth-round pick for Justin Fields. Fields arrives in Pittsburgh as the backup, but he expressed that playing for the Steelers was a preferred option for him. Wilson is slated to be the starter in 2024, with Fields given the opportunity to compete for the job.

As OTAs got underway in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Fields took time to speak to the media. During his interview, he shared his mindset heading into the season, marking the first time in his NFL career that he is preparing as a backup.

“I’m definitely competing. I think Russ knows that. We are competing against each other every day. I definitely don’t have the mindset of me just sitting all year. I’m coming in every day giving it all I got. Pushing him to be his best and he’s pushing me to be my best each and every day.”

Fields made it clear that he has zero interest in being a backup. He is happy to be in Pittsburgh and thrilled to share the quarterback room with Wilson, a player who inspired him growing up. At 35, Wilson brings a wealth of experience as the veteran in the room. The Steelers have communicated to Fields that their hope is for him to learn under Wilson and eventually become the future of the franchise.

The Steelers' quarterback situation will be a hot topic all year long, generating intense interest and debate among fans and analysts alike. Both Fields and Wilson have approached the competition with the utmost professionalism, demonstrating respect for each other and a commitment to the team's success. However, if anyone thought Fields would simply use this time to sit back and learn from the sidelines, they are mistaken.

Fields is determined to come in every day, putting in the hard work and effort necessary to try and win the starting job from Wilson. His drive and ambition will undoubtedly push Wilson to perform at his best, creating a dynamic and competitive environment that could elevate the entire team. This fierce competition between two talented quarterbacks is sure to keep everyone on their toes and could be the key to a successful season for the Steelers.

Steelers' QB Room Is In A Healthy Spot In 2024

The Steelers' quarterback room is poised for drama, as two players who both feel worthy of the starting job will be competing head-to-head for the position. Mike Tomlin has made it clear that Wilson is the starter, but Fields will have the chance to compete. If Wilson struggles during the season, it will be interesting to see how quickly the organization turns to Fields.

The Steelers are in a healthy spot with two solid quarterbacks competing for the job. Competition sharpens the iron, and it's likely that either Fields or Wilson will be an upgrade at the most important position during the 2024 season.
