Steelers’ Kenny Pickett Doesn’t Hold Back On Struggling Offense
Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY Sports

There was a lot of optimism surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers coming into the 2023 season. They looked great during the preseason as the offense was moving the ball with ease against their opponents. However, that has not translated to the regular season.

The Steelers are 1-1 through two games but their offense has been abysmal. They defeated the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 on Monday Night Football without making a single trip to the red zone as the defense was dominant throughout the evening.

Another mind-blowing statistic was that the Steelers managed -7 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter and still managed to pull off a comeback victory. The defense scored two touchdowns in the game, making life miserable for the Browns.

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett knows the offense is a problem and it needs to be fixed. He didn’t hold back when talking about their struggles, saying that the team needs to find an identity on that side of the ball.

“We’ve got to find it. Clearly, we don’t have one,” Pickett said, via Dale Lolley of the team’s website. “It’s a team game, the ultimate team game. One guy does something wrong on a play as an offense, it usually doesn’t go your way. So, we’ve got to stay together. Don’t let the popcorn effect happen, which is one guy on each play.” (H/T ProFootballTalk)

There has been a rare highlight here and there, such as the 71-yard catch and run by George Pickens for a touchdown. Or the few explosive plays that running back Jaylen Warren has provided.

Alas, for every good play, the Steelers have a number of bad ones. Pickett acknowledged those kinds of plays need to be eliminated for this unit to get on track.

“The attitude is going to be there. People are frustrated. Nobody likes to be playing like that,” Pickett said. “From a fanbase standpoint, a player standpoint, nobody wants that offense out there that we’re putting out right now. We know we have to be better. We’re going to keep pushing for that.”

Despite how ugly things have looked, the potential is there for this to be an explosive unit. While it wasn’t always against starters, they dominated in the preseason, showing the capabilities of the offense when clicking on all cylinders.

The slow start is frustrating, but confidence remains high. Pickett and his teammates know that they are capable of getting the job done and are sticking together to figure it out.

“I just want to get back to playing offense the way we know we can play it, running the football, having the play-action of it, getting the guys the ball downfield,” Pickett said. “It just seems we’re missing an element of that in the two times we’ve been out.”

“I see these guys work. I know what we can do. When you watch the tape, you see things that aren’t us. We want to be perfect out there. You’re never going to be perfect, but that’s what you’re pushing for.”
