Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger previously made it known that he wasn't all that impressed with Drew Allar after Pittsburgh grabbed the quarterback prospect in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Roethlisberger offered those comments before Allar began practicing with the Steelers this spring and before it was reported that the Steelers are "essentially uninstalling everything he's learned, and they're re-uploading their own methods and fundamentals and mechanics with Allar."
During the latest edition of his podcast, Roethlisberger explained why he doesn't like what he has seen thus far seen from Allar.
"When I'm watching him do three-step drops, that makes me incredibly nervous," Roethlisberger said about Allar, per Troy Montgomery of Steelers Depot. "You might say, 'Why? You're refining things.' There's a difference in refining things and teaching. When we did football camps, the first thing you're teaching the youngest kids is how to do a three-step drop..."
What the Steelers are and aren't doing regarding Allar's development ahead of his first pro training camp shouldn't set off too many alarms for any observer. After all, Allar is on track to begin September as Pittsburgh's third-choice option at the position. Future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers is now back atop the Steelers' depth chart, while veteran Mason Rudolph and 2025 rookie Will Howard will presumably compete for the QB2 job this summer.
"Maybe they're working on his three-step drop to be more efficient," Roethlisberger added about Allar. "But it looked to me like it was baby steps, teaching...I could be completely wrong. All I'm saying is that it makes me a little nervous to watch it and be like, 'They're working on a three-step drop.'"
If nothing else, Roethlisberger's comments may serve as yet another reminder that Allar is more of a project for the future than some Steelers fans hoped when the club took a flier on the Penn State product. First-year Pittsburgh head coach Mike McCarthy seemingly wants to sit Allar until 2027, so the rookie shouldn't need to take more than "baby steps" in practices with preseason games still months down the road.
