The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with free-agent safety Jaquan Brisker on a one-year, $5.5 million contract, adding a hard-hitting Pittsburgh native to a defensive backfield already strengthened by multiple free-agent signings that signal a clear commitment to locking down the secondary.

Brisker, a 26-year-old who attended Gateway High School in the Pittsburgh area before starring at Penn State, returns home after four seasons with the Chicago Bears. Drafted in the second round (No. 48 overall) in 2022, the versatile safety developed into a reliable starter for Chicago after being named “unsung hero” of the 2022 NFL season.

Pro Football Focus gave Brisker an overall grade of 60.4 in 2025 (68th among qualifying safeties), with standout marks in run defense (73.7) and pass rush (73.2). His physical, alley-filling style and ability to play deep or in the box align perfectly with the Steelers’ defensive identity.

The Brisker addition caps a busy stretch of defensive back moves.

The Steelers agreed to a three-year, $36.75 million deal with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean. Dean posted a strong 2025 season with three interceptions, including a pick-six, and earned a PFF grade near 80.6 while allowing one of the league’s lowest passer ratings when targeted.

For continuity, Pittsburgh re-signed cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to a one-year, $4 million contract. The 26-year-old provides versatile depth and recorded an interception in limited action last season.

At safety, the team added veteran Darnell Savage on a one-year deal to bolster depth behind incumbents such as DeShon Elliott and Jalen Ramsey, who has shifted roles.

These signings, tracked across free-agency updates and reports, illustrate the Steelers’ strategy to fortify the back end of their defense.

With established pieces like cornerback Joey Porter Jr. already in place, the additions of Dean and Samuel Jr. at corner and Brisker and Savage at safety create competition and experience across the unit. The Steelers have long highlighted the organization’s emphasis on smart, scheme-fitting acquisitions, and Brisker’s local roots add an inspirational hometown element.

Brisker overcame injury setbacks to rebound strongly in 2025 with the Bears, delivering key plays. His tackling prowess and football intelligence, noted in scouting reports from his Penn State days, position him to contribute immediately.

PFF analysis and league observers point to Pittsburgh’s potential to elevate pass defense and overall run support with their recent moves. Dean’s coverage skills complement Porter Jr., while Brisker and Savage provide the downhill physicality Pittsburgh defenses thrive on. The moves address needs at both safety and corner after several veterans became free agents.

As the offseason continues, the Steelers’ secondary now projects as one of the AFC’s more formidable units. Fans in the Steel City can anticipate a revamped backfield ready to disrupt offenses and anchor another strong defensive campaign in 2026. Brisker’s homecoming and the collective additions represent a deliberate step toward building sustained dominance in the defensive backfield.
