Steelers Make Clear Decision On Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback Situation

Despite some rumors that the Pittsburgh Steelers might close the door on Aaron Rodgers and draft Shedeur Sanders as their first-round draft pick last night, they ultimately did neither.

According to NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Steelers are continuing to maintain contact with Rodgers and are still waiting for him to reach a decision on playing for them or not. Per the report, neither team is setting a timetable on the other.

"The Steelers and Aaron Rodgers are continuing to maintain dialogue as the team waits on the future Hall of Famer’s free agency decision, a source tells me. No timetable has been set by either side," Russini wrote on Friday.

NFL fans see this report from Russini as a big nothingburger though:

"I am writing to report that there is nothing to report. My sources are telling me nothing has happened. Although the two sides have not come to an agreement, there is no timeline yet for them to do so. That said, nothing has changed," one user mocked.

"But we were told they gave him a deadline 48 hours before the draft, so which one is it?" another wrote, tagging NFL insider Josina Anderson.

"I guess 'volunteers not hostages' doesn’t exist no more," wrote a third.

The Steelers are seemingly the only team interested in bringing Rodgers into the fold and don't have many viable options for next season if they don't land him. As it stands, veteran Mason Rudolph and journeyman Skyler Thompson are the only quarterbacks even under contract for the team.

It's very hard to imagine that the Steelers don't exit the draft with at least one quarterback, whether it's Shedeur Sanders, one of the other QB prospects or an undrafted quarterback who everyone overlooks.

The real question is whether the Steelers have a true contingency plan in place in the event that Rodgers simply chooses not to join them. As frustrating as it must have been for fans to sit through years of lackluster football from the likes of Russell Wilson and Kenny Pickett, they would probably tear their hair out if they went into 2025 with Rudolph as QB1 and Thompson as QB2.

What on earth is the plan for the Steelers? Are they all-in on Rodgers, or will they find a suitable player to develop or even challenge for the starting job as a rookie in 2025?
